Seventy-four Foss Maritime and subsidiary companies’ tugs and tank barges with a combined 843 years without an incident have been recognized by a major maritime organization for their environmental records.
The Chamber of Shipping of America announced the 2016 Environmental Achievement Awards honoring the Seattle-based company’s work on Nov.2 in Washington, DC. Foss and its sister companies have 37 vessels with 10 or more years without an environmental incident; 11 of those vessels have achieved 20-plus years of environmental excellence.
“We are truly honored by this award, since it underscores our dedication to the highest safety standards and care for the environment,” Foss CEO John Parrott said. “These values are an important part of our corporate culture and also what our customers demand.”
“Foss’ commitment to safeguarding the environmental is something that we take great pride in," company Vice President Susan Hayman said. “It’s this commitment that helps make Foss an industry leader.”
The awards are open to all owners and operators of vessels that operate on oceans or inland waterways.
“These awards celebrate the dedication to environmental excellence of our seafarers and the company personnel shore-side who operate our vessels to the highest standards,” CSA President Kathy Metcalf said.
A list of all vessels receiving the 2016 Environmental Achievement Award is posted on CSAs website: www.knowships.org. To find the list, click on “News & Events,” then click “Press Releases.”

Foss Vessels Receive Safety Award
By Mark Edward Nero
The Chamber of Shipping of America, a Washington, DC-based organization representing 31 US-based companies engaged in domestic and international trade, has recognized 75 Foss Maritime vessels with the 2014 Jones F. Devlin award for outstanding safety records.
The vessels were recognized at the CSA Annual Safety Awards Luncheon in New Orleans on May 28.
The Jones F. Devlin award is given to self-propelled merchant vessels that have operated at least two full years without a crewmember losing a full turn at watch because of an occupational injury. The award publicly recognizes the men and women responsible for those safe vessel operations.
Altogether, the Foss vessels achieved the equivalent of 529 years of incident-free operation. Sixty-three vessels had five or more years, and ten vessels boasted 10 to 21 years without a lost-time injury.
“Foss takes safety very seriously,” Foss president and CEO Paul Stevens said. “We’re proud of our safety programs, intensive trainings, resources and operations. We believe that every person has the right to return home safely at night, and we do all that we can to make sure that happens.”

By Mark Edward Nero
The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) recently recognized
hundreds of vessels for their outstanding safety records by naming them Jones
F. Devlin award winners at the CSA Annual Safety Awards Luncheon May 29 in New
Orleans.
Crowley Maritime saw 75 of its vessels recognized, while
Foss Maritime had 73 vessels honored for outstanding safety records.
The Jones F. Devlin award is given to self-propelled
merchant vessels that have operated for two full years or more without a crew
member losing a full turn at watch because of an occupational injury. The award
publicly recognizes the skills and dedication of the men and women who are
responsible for those safe vessel operations.
Crowley’s Devlin Award-winning vessels together have
achieved a total of 510 years of service without a lost time injury. Of the 75
awarded, 19 have gone without incident for 10 or more consecutive years.
“Safety is at the top of Crowley’s core values and strategic
goals,” Mike Golonka, vice president, ship management, said. “The vessels
receiving Devlin Awards exemplify this Crowley core value, because they live it
every day – for themselves, their families and Crowley.”
The Foss vessels achieved the equivalent of 483 years
without a lost-time injury. Of Foss’ 73 awarded vessels, 57 achieved five or
more years of incident-free operation, with 10 of those vessels attaining ten
or more years.
“We’re very proud of our program, training, resources and
operations,” Foss President and CEO Paul Stevens said. “. The men and women of

their safety and well-being are our highest priority.”

of America awards ceremony, held Nov. 14 in Washington, DC.
The certificates were
awarded to Crowley-owned and operated vessels for having worked at least two
consecutive years without an environmental incident. Additionally, Crowley was
also presented with a membership award in recognition of five years of support

Foss Vessels Recognized with Safety Awards
Eighty-one Foss tugs and manned barges were recognized by the
Chamber of Shipping of America for commitment to safety and granted Jones F.
Devlin Awards during the CSA’s Annual Safety Awards Luncheon in New Orleans on
May 23.
Altogether, the Foss vessels achieved the equivalent of 463
years without a lost-time injury.
The Jones F. Devlin Safety Awards are given to
self-propelled merchant vessels that have operated for two full years or more
without a crewmember losing a full turn at watch because of an occupational
injury.
“We’re proud of the men and women who work hard to earn Foss
this prestigious recognition,” Foss Chief Executive Officer Paul Stevens said.
Three levels of achievement are recognized by CSA: a basic
two-year award; a three-year award; and a four-year award. Of Foss’ 81-awarded
vessels, 47 received a special award that is given annually to ships with five
or more years of accident-free operation.
The Devlin award has publicly recognized the skills and
dedication of the men and women who are responsible for those safe vessel
operations for 55 years.
The Washington, D.C.-based Chamber represents 37 US-based
companies that own, operate or charter oceangoing tankers, container ships and
other merchant vessels engaged in both the domestic and international trades
and other entities that maintain a commercial interest in the operation of such
oceangoing vessels.
Seventy-three Crowley Maritime Corp. vessels received Devlin
awards during the same luncheon.
“This year, we gave awards to 1,438 vessels that operated
8,394 years without a lost-time incident,” CSA President Joseph J. Cox said.
“This extraordinary record is directly attributable to the professionalism of
our seafarers and the dedication of shore-based company personnel to safe
operation.”
