San Diego Seaport Village Gains Tenants

By Karen Robes Meeks

Three popular local businesses will soon call the Port of San Diego’s Seaport Village home.

Port commissioners recently voted to approve leases for Mike Hess Brewing, Mr. Moto Pizza, and Spill the Beans, all of which are expected to open in 2020.

Mike Hess Brewing, which currently has locations in Miramar, North Park, Imperial Beach and Ocean Beach, will occupy a space along the waterfront boardwalk in the Carousel District north of the Pier Café. It will feature a beer tasting room and patio area with a full-service restaurant.

Mr. Moto Pizza will open its sixth location taking the space adjacent to Mike Hess Brewing in the Carousel District.

Opening a second location, specialty coffee and bagel shop Spill the Beans will move in to Seaport Village’s Lighthouse District across from the Marriott Marina near San Pasqual Winery.

“The port is thrilled to bring some new and established local favorites to the San Diego Bay waterfront for the enjoyment of San Diegans as well as those who visit us from across the country and around the world,” said Port Board Chairman Garry Bonelli. “These new tenants will help bring fresh energy and vitality to the diverse shops, unique eateries and outdoor entertainment already offered at the vibrant harbor-side hub.”

San Diego Port Retail Space on the Market

By Karen Robes Meeks

RI Properties, Inc. beat out four others to list and market vacant retail space at Seaport Village at the Port of San Diego for at least the next three years.

RI will fill vacancies at the 90,000-square-foot shopping and dining center on an as needed basis while plans to redevelop the Central Embarcadero are underway. Port commissioners in late 2016 chose 1HWY1 and its “Seaport San Diego” concept to transform the Central Embarcadero, which includes Seaport Village.

After Seaport Village’s lease ends on September 30, Protea Property Management, Inc. will manage the 14-acre destination on the San Diego bayfront south of Tuna Harbor on the port’s behalf.

San Diego Seeks Seaport Village Operator

By Karen Robes Meeks

The Port of San Diego is seeking bids from companies interested in operating the Seaport Village on an interim basis after the current lease ends on September 30, 2018.

Last year, the port chose the 1HWY1 team to reimagine the Central Embarcadero, which includes Seaport Village and surrounding areas, an undertaking that project will take several years.

By having an interim operator, the port is ensuring that the 14-acre site with 70 retailers and restaurants will remain open while the port redevelops the Central Embarcadero.

Proposals are due on October 12, with follow-up interviews scheduled for October30-31. A presentation before the Board of Port Commissioners is expected to take place December 5.

San Diego Waterfront Project Moves Forward

By Karen Robes Meeks

The Port of San Diego confirmed it is working with the current operator of Seaport Village to keep the waterfront shopping and dining area open to the public as it transitions into a larger project to redevelop the Central Embarcadero.

The port, whose lease with current operator TRC expires on September 30, 2018, will seek bids from firms who could run Seaport Village while the redevelopment of Central Embarcadero takes shape over the next five years. The revival project encompasses Seaport Village, as well as Chesapeake Fish, and surrounding areas between the Grand Hyatt Hotel and the USS Midway.

Meanwhile, the port is in exclusive talks with Protea Waterfront Development, the managing member of 1HWY1, and the team chosen to reimagine the Central Embarcadero.

Currently, Seaport Village features roughly 50 specialty retailers, 17 eating and dining spots as well as outdoor entertainment, and is expected to remain open after TRC’s lease expires, according to the port.

The new Central Embarcadero is expected to include 30 acres of parks, open spaces, plazas, piers and walkways; a 480-foot tall observation tower; facilities for commercial fishing, recreational boat and mega-yacht services; retail and office space.
