GPS map tracking and shipment details and other functions have been expanded in Lynden’s mobile app.
Improvements include time and date stamps on received and delivered statuses, equipment number(s) are shown in search results, shipment details pages, and on the available Excel export for easier searching and tracking, especially if customers have multiple loads, according to the company.
The app also has improved GPS maps, which now is featured in more in-transit shipment statuses.
“Most notable are shipments on Alaska Marine Lines’ barges which can now be tracked every mile of the journey,” the company said. “Maps are also offered for select truck shipments and show freight scanned into most Service Centers for all modes.”
Visit www.lynden.com/mobile for more on the app.

Lynden Continues to Operate Amid COVID-19
By Karen Robes Meeks
Employees throughout Lynden’s family of companies continue to move vital goods to customers amid the COVID-19 development.
Chairman Jim Jansen said in a release Friday that Lynden is committed to delivering essential supplies and services to customers and communities.
"The safety of our people and serving our customers are our priorities during these challenging times,” he said. “We've been keeping freight moving to Alaska since 1954, and we're not planning to stop now."
The company’s barges, trucks and planes bound for Alaska have been keeping the supply line going without disruption since late February as the health crisis began to unfold.
"Our customers need our support to keep their businesses operating during this time and we are also supporting state and federal agencies,” said Lynden President Jon Burdick. “Keeping delivery routes open and supplies moving is our main focus and goal. We have dealt with earthquakes, oil spills, floods and other obstacles. This situation is no different."

Brown Line Trucking Wins EPA Award
By Karen Robes Meeks
Brown Line, part of the Lynden family of companies that specializes in the trucking of temperature-controlled goods, recently garnered its third straight SmartWay High Performer Award from the Environmental Protection Agency.
"Our team is very proud to receive this award for the third consecutive year," says Brown Line President Bill Johansen. "We continue to work hard to ensure we reduce carbon emissions by reducing idle time, sudden starts and stops and by using a new system called SmartDrive. This system allows our team to work together to improve driver safety and driving habits while reducing carbon emissions."
Brown Line, who has a location in Mount Vernon, Wash., has made several sustainable upgrades this year, including the addition of 14 new fuel-efficient trucks to its fleet – a move that makes 90 percent of its equipment less than five years old – and enhancing its refrigeration units with StarTrak, which alerts personnel of any temperature issues.
The company has also made a nearly 40 percent improvement in its fuel consumption over the past five years. It has curbed its nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions per ton mile by 44 and 62 percent respectively over the last seven years.

Lynden Businesses Recertified Green Star
By Karen Robes Meeks
Lynden Transport, Alaska West Express, Lynden International and Lynden Air Cargo have been re-certified as Green Star businesses at a recent Alaska Forum on the Environment event in Anchorage, Alaska.
Addressing the Anchorage Rotary last February, Lynden’s Green Initiative Coordinator Anna Deal talked about the Lynden companies’ environmental advancements, including how “Lynden’s common-sense approach to going green is good business and how small changes can add up to big savings for businesses and the environment.”
Established in 1990, Green Star is the only program on Pollution Prevention in Alaska. It seeks to lower or remove the volume or toxicity of materials, pollutants, or wastes at the source so that they never become waste in the first place.

Lynden Moves Statue
By Karen Robes Meeks
Lynden companies played a significant role in bringing a life-size bronze statue of the late Alaska Senator Ted Stevens to his namesake airport in Anchorage, Alaska. The statue was unveiled Feb. 23.
Lynden – which had a long relationship with Stevens – assisted with customs for shipment of materials from China and shipped materials from Los Angeles to Alaska for the backdrop of the statue.
Alaska Marine Lines picked up the clay form from the artist Joan Bugbee Jackson in Cordova, Alaska for transport to Seattle before delivering it to a foundry in Oregon for bronzing. Lynden Transport was there for the remaining part of the statue’s journey to back to Alaska and stored it in Anchorage until final installation could take place.
"This is such a wonderful tribute to the Senator who truly loved Alaskans and shaped our state," says Jeanine St. John, Vice President of Lynden Logistics.

Alaska Marine Lines Launches Barge
By Mark Edward Nero
Alaska Marine Lines celebrated the launch of its newest barge, Skagway Provider, at a July 7 ceremony at Gunderson Marine in Portland, Oregon where the vessel was constructed.
The heavy deck cargo barge is expected to make its maiden voyage from Seattle to Southeast Alaska on July 29, and will begin serving Alaska Marine Lines customers on the Seattle to Southeast Alaska route.
“We are proud to offer our customers additional capacity between Seattle and Southeast Alaska via the Skagway Provider,” Alaska Marine Lines President Kevin Anderson said in a statement. “It represents a significant investment in our Southeast Alaska service.”
Most Southeast communities have no land-route link with either the Lower 48 or the rest of Alaska,” he explained. “Virtually everything comes in by water – cars, heavy equipment, food and medical supplies – so providing reliable, efficient and safe equipment to serve our customers is extremely important to us.”
The Skagway Provider’s 360-foot by 100-foot by 22-foot hull has capacity for 13,200 tons of cargo or about 800 20-foot containers, and is in the same class as Alaska Marine Lines’ barges Sitka Provider, Southeast Provider and Stikine Provider. Gunderson Marine has long been a supplier for Alaska Marine Lines, constructing 16 barges for the company over the past 18 years.
Alaska Marine Lines is part of the Lynden family of companies, which includes 17 freight and logistics businesses in Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and beyond.
ASL offers twice weekly barge service to Southeast Alaska including Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Sitka, Haines, Skagway, Wrangell, as well as twice-weekly service to Central Alaska, seasonal service to Western Alaska, and bi-weekly service to Hawaii.
