All American Marine, Inc.’s 128-foot, 600-passenger boat Enhydra earned vessel of the year at the 2018 International WorkBoat Show.
The vessel was constructed for tour company Red and White Fleet at All American Marine’s new 58,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in downtown Bellingham, Wash. It launched at the Squalicum Harbor boat launch.
All American and BAE Systems teamed up to build the Enhydra, currently the biggest lithium-ion battery electric hybrid-powered vessel in North America constructed under USCG Subchapter K certification.
“We are proud to introduce such a large-capacity hybrid technology vessel and working with such great partners such as Red and White Fleet and BAE Systems to develop and build the boat of the future," All American Marine CEO Matt Mullett said. "All American is working to stay at the forefront of the decarbonization movement in the maritime industry, and the lithium-ion hybrid electric propulsion system on the Enhydra is a step in the right direction.”

All American Marine Wins Hybrid Vessel Contract

Bellingham, Wash.-based All American Marine said Feb. 13 that it has inked a deal for the construction of a new hybrid electric passenger vessel to be delivered to Red and White Fleet, a San Francisco-based boat tour and sightseeing company.
The contract for the new 600-passenger aluminum monohull was signed during the recent annual Maritrends Conference put on by the Passenger Vessel Association.
“All American Marine is pleased to have been chosen to construct this innovative new vessel for Red & White Fleet and we are proud to offer a hybrid propulsion system that truly works with instant and tangible benefits,” AAM Vice President of Business Development Joe Hudspeth remarked.
The contract follows an earlier announcement made by the company regarding a construction agreement for a 500-passenger aluminum monohull tour boat for Argosy Cruises of Seattle. Both operators originally pursued construction contracts for steel monohulls, but AAM said it was successfully able to demonstrate considerable savings in construction and maintenance costs with an aluminum design, while ensuring delivery of a solid hull structure.
AAM, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, is also in the process of moving into a brand new purpose-built ship building facility at Squalicum Harbor.
Argosy is expected to take delivery of their vessel in the late fall, while Red and White Fleet should receive their new craft in the late spring of 2018.
The vessels are being designed by naval architect, Nic de Waal, of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand.
The new vessel for Red and White Fleet, to be christened Enhydra, will be the first aluminum hulled, Lithium-Ion battery-electric hybrid vessel built from the keel up under U.S. Coast Guard passenger vessel regulations, and the latest guidelines for structural fire protection.
The vessel will be 128 feet long with a moulded beam of 30 feet and is specifically designed for harbor tours of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
All American Marine partnered with BAE Systems to design and integrate the complete battery electric hybrid system. BAE Systems will supply its HybriDrive Propulsion System, including a generator, control system, and AC electric traction motor.
The generator will mount to a variable speed Cummins QSL9 410 mhp@2100 rpm diesel engine. The motor generator offers diesel-electric operation of the AC traction motor which is coupled directly to the propulsion shaft. The hybrid system will also utilize battery power from two 80 kWh Lithium-ion battery packs.
“We see the propulsion configuration on the Enhydra as phase one in our move toward the full electrification of our fleet,” Red and White Fleet’s Vice President of Operations, Joe Burgard, said. “Stay tuned for phase two.”

Harbor Breezes Cruises Expands Fleet

Bellingham, Washington-based All American Marine Inc. and Long Beach, California-based Harbor Breeze Cruises have announced the completion and delivery of an aluminum catamaran passenger vessel to operate in the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors.
The new vessel, M/V La Espada, is a multi-purpose catamaran and will provide harbor tours, whale watch cruises, dinner cruises, and charter ferry service to Catalina Island. La Espada, whose name means ‘the sword’ in Spanish, is 83 feet by 29.5 feet and is certified to carry 250 passengers.
Harbor Breeze Cruises previously contracted with the builder to build a similar catamaran, the M/V Triumphant, in 2013. Both vessels are designed by Teknicraft Design of Auckland, New Zealand and feature Teknicraft’s signature catamaran hull shape with a symmetrical bow and asymmetrical tunnel.
“We appreciated naval architect, Nic De Waal's, ability to translate our wish list into a functional design and the team at All American Marine for making our dreams a reality,” Harbor Breeze Cruises Vice President Amber Boyle commented.
La Espada and her sister-ship are both hydrofoil-supported catamarans and the gallons per nautical mile fuel consumption curve is nearly constant from 17 knots up to 27 knots. The fuel-efficient hull, which reduces operating costs, can reach 30 knots.
The vessel is powered by twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT Tier III engines with 1450 bhp at 2100 rpm.
Features on board La Espada include stadium-style seating on the foredeck for unobstructed views, comfortable interior and exterior seating, ADA accessibility, and a snack bar in the main deck cabin. The upper deck features a premium cabin, complete with a private bar.
There are also several eco-friendly features, including low voltage LED lighting throughout the entire vessel. Also, the catamaran transforms at night when color changing LED lighting is turned on inside the main deck cabin. LED accent lights are also used to light up the vessel exterior as well as acrylic glass panels along the upper aft deck. Tinted glass was used for all passenger windows to mitigate energy use associated with offsetting heat gain. Lightweight aluminum honeycomb wall panels and perforated aluminum ceiling tiles were used to outfit the cabin interior without adding mass that causes excessive fuel burn.

All American Marine Wins Catamaran Contract

Bellingham, Washington-based All American Marine has been awarded a contract with the US Army Corps of Engineers for the design and construction of a new hydrofoil supported aluminum catamaran survey vessel, the Army Corps said Feb. 22.
The new vessel is expected to replace the 46-year-old survey boat Shuman, and primarily perform survey missions and some dive operations in support of dredging work planned within the Corps’ Philadelphia district.
The as yet unnamed 68- by 26-foot custom aluminum catamaran will be designed by Auckland, New Zealand firm Teknicraft Design, Ltd., for whom All American Marine is the exclusive in North America builder.
The aluminum hull will feature the Teknicraft Design signature hull shape with symmetrical bow, asymmetrical tunnel and integrated wave piercer. A custom aluminum hydrofoil will be fit to span between the sponsons to generate lift of the semi displacement hulls and enhance performance.
Power for the propeller driven vessel will be provided by a pair of Caterpillar C18 diesel engines rated at 1,001 BHP at 2,300 rpm, with an EPA Tier III emissions rating. Auxiliary power will be supplied via twin Northern Lights C40M.3 40.kW generators. The vessel will have a cruise speed of 28 knots.
The vessel’s suite of deck gear includes a hydraulic A-frame, davit, scientific winch, and moon pool with deployable sonar strut. Dive platforms will be fit to the transom of each sponson.
This latest contract follows the delivery of the 62-foot Florida II, a foil assisted survey vessel that All American Marine was previously awarded to build for the US Army Corp’s Jacksonville, Fla. district.

King County Dedicates New Water Taxi
King County Executive Dow Constantine and a host of other dignitaries were on hand recently for the dedication of the M/V Doc Maynard, a ferry built by Bellingham, Washington-based All American Marine.
The ferry is currently replacing the M/V Sally Fox, which was also built by All American and is being removed from service for scheduled warranty work. When Sally Fox is back in service, Doc Maynard will move to the Seattle-West Seattle route.
“This new boat – the first all-new water taxi from West Seattle to downtown in generations – will improve what is already a fast, reliable link for thousands of commuters,” King County Executive Dow Constantine said during a mid-September dedication ceremony. “Like its twin, the Sally Fox, the M/V Doc Maynard has highly efficient engines, uses cleaner-burning biodiesel, and can carry more passengers than the boat it is replacing.”
The M/V Doc Maynard is larger than the catamaran it’s replacing; the vessel carries 278 passengers. It also has indoor and outdoor seating, ADA accessible bathrooms and wheelchair tie-downs, space for 26 bicycles and video screens that will display safety, schedule and trip information.
Dock modifications are being planned to accommodate the larger vessel.
The Doc Maynard and Sally Fox both support King County’s climate change goals by using a 10 percent blend of homegrown biodiesel. By using biodiesel, each vessel is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 140 metric tons annually, the equivalent of powering 20 homes for a year.

Los Angeles Port Awards All American Marine $2.47M Vessel Contract
The Port of Los Angeles has awarded a $2.47 million contract to Bellingham,Wash.-based boatbuilder All American Marine, Inc., for the construction of a new 65-foot dive and patrol vessel.
The 65-foot by 24-foot wide aluminum catamaran will be used by the LA Port Police dive team and will feature Australia-based Teknicraft Design’s signature hull shape and hydrofoil technology. The design of the vessel is based upon the previously built R/V Shearwater and R/V Fulmar, which are operated by NOAA throughout California’s four National Marine Sanctuaries. All American Marine is the exclusive builder for Teknicraft catamarans in North America.
"We specialize in the design and construction of custom vessels, but selling another sister ship is a nice testament to the quality of the vessels we construct," All American Marine business development manager Joe Hudspeth said.
The new vessel will serve as a key asset to the port police for a wide variety of safety and security missions. One of the key functions of this multipurpose vessel is the ability to conduct oceanographic surveys within the port. By monitoring the seafloor, the LA Port Police can help ensure that America’s largest seaport remains safe and operational.
The new vessel will replace a nearly 25-year-old 46-foot vessel currently operated in the same role that has suffered from rising maintenance costs and decreasing functionality.
"Overall, the usefulness of the current vessel has significantly diminished and can no longer accommodate the requisite sonar equipment essential to dive, sonar and recovery operations," port staff said in a memo to the port's governing board.
The new vessel, according to the port, will save $335,000 in maintenance costs over ten years.
The interior layout of the new vessel promises more than 150 square feet of wet and dry working space, a fully equipped galley, and a dinette with u-shaped settee.
The working deck layout will accommodate a hydraulically actuated A-frame, survey winch, and dive platforms.
The propulsion package features twin Cummins QSM-11engines, each offering 705 BHP at 2,500 RPM.
The new vessel is scheduled for delivery in mid-2012.
