Cargo volume at the Port of Oakland rose 3.6 percent in July compared to a year ago, an increase the port attribute to more empty containers returning to Asia to be replenished with new products. Strong import activity earlier in the summer may have contributed to the rise in empty container volume, according to the port.
Meanwhile, the amount of imported cargo dipped 0.6 percent, while exports fell 7.3 percent year-over-year.
Based on the current 2018 numbers, Oakland’s total container volume is up 2.5 percent from the same period a year ago. If the trend continues, the port is on track to set a new full-year volume record.
