As part of its ongoing initiative regarding eco-friendly
hull paint for boats, the Port of San Diego is inviting members of the area’s
boating community to a special expo where they can learn about the hull paints
and grant funding available to help make the switch from copper-based paint.
The third annual Eco-Friendly Hull Paint Expo is scheduled
for 10 a.m. to noon March 16, 2013, at the Shelter Island Boat Yard, 2330
Shelter Island Drive in San Diego.
During the event, the boating community will be provided
information on hull paints that protect a boat’s hull while reducing the
paint’s environmental impact. Paint manufacturers, Port of San Diego staff
members and representatives of San Diego Bay boatyards are expected to be at
the expo to answer questions and provide hull paint demonstrations.
The port recently announced new financial incentives
available through a State Water Resources Control Board grant. Shelter Island
Yacht Basin boaters may qualify to save between 60 to 75 percent on hull
painting costs in addition to cost offsets to remove copper hull paint,
according to the port.
Grant funds are available through June 30, 2014, or until
the funds are exhausted. Funding is limited to boat owners within the Shelter
Island Yacht Basin.
